Scouts Summer Camp 2018 – Czech Republic
The scout section has just returned from our annual summer camp. This year, we traveled to the village of Revice in the Bohemian region of the Czech Republic. With Leaders Colm Finlay, James Kinlan, and Padraig Fox at the helm, we set off for a week filled with adventure, exploration, and a few culinary experiments!
Our base for the week was a “Jeka” hostel, which quickly became our home away from home. This year, we tackled the challenge of cooking our own meals. However, our culinary skills were put to the test by some questionable ingredients, including a powdered goulash that either we didn’t cook quite right or simply wasn’t destined to be a camp favourite! Thankfully, mashed potatoes saved the day more than once.
The week was jam-packed with activities that tested our nerves, endurance, and teamwork. Early in the week, we plunged into canoeing on a local river, navigating through gentle currents.
Mid-week, we took a much-anticipated day trip to the city of Prague. The scouts had some free time to explore the city. There was a bit of a nerve-wracking moment at the train station when we worried we wouldn’t all make it back in time for our return journey. Thankfully, we all managed to meet up just in time—proof that our navigation skills were improving! On our way back to Revice, we made a pit stop for some bowling.
Later in the week, our adventurous spirits were tested with high ropes courses and rock climbing. The high ropes pushed everyone out of their comfort zones, with scouts cheering each other on as they navigated wobbly bridges and towering obstacles. Rock climbing presented another challenge, with everyone giving their best effort to reach the top.
One of the highlights of the week was white-water rafting. There were plenty of splashes, and a few close calls as we worked together to navigate the river’s twists and turns. On hot days, we made sure to fit in some swimming, cooling off in the river by the hostel. And of course, we couldn’t resist the dry toboggans, racing down the tracks through the hills.
We returned home a little tired, a little sun-kissed, and with plenty of tales to tell from our week in the Czech Republic!
